Abundant: A Christmas Poem

we’re making a list and checking it twice

we’re not quite sure all our work will suffice

so we wrap it with ribbon to make it look nice

not enough

she wants all the goodies she sees at the store

in case mom can’t hear her, she begins to emplore

that she needs all these toys, that one, and more

not enough

all these places to go, but you really need rest

all these faces to wear, it feels like a test

can you be all, do all, and make it the best

not enough

He quiets your heart and opens your hands

He fills them with grace instead of demands

Behold his great love, this was the plan

abundant

This Christmas, sit for a minute and behold the abundance of the Lord. Behold God With Us, the mighty Savior and anticipated King, crying in a manger. He didn’t come half way down. He came all the way down. He didn’t come that we might have a kinda good life. He came that we might have life and have it abundantly.

You don’t need to manufacture this abundance. You don’t need to set the mood for Christ to come by sweeping under the trees or making garlands or putting on Frank Sinatra. Just sit here and behold. Open your hands and receive the gift of Christ today. Nothing in our hands we bring that could properly welcome a king, but with our hearts bent low we magnify our Lord forevermore.

Merry Christmas, my friends. There is so much to celebrate.
